What happens to sunlight

A small proportion of the electomagnetic radiation emitted by the Sun reaches the Earth.

Some of this solar radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere and some strikes the surface of the Earth.

Absorbtion in the atmosphere is complicated by

• the variation of density with altitude
• chemical reactions that constantly create and destroy varies species (atoms, molecules and ions) which all absorb light to different extents.
