by choosing the General Preferences option from the Options menu and adjusting the settings for Show Main Toolbar as from the Appearance tab to use Text rather than Pictures or Pictures and Text.
using the appropriate commands from the Options menu to remove the ticks from beside the options to Show Location and Show Directory Buttons. You could also choose to turn off the Toolbar since all the commands on it can be accessed from the main Menubar or with a long click on the main display.
